Marion's grandnephew (also named Marion) said he knew Marion before he died. He said Marion drove a horse-drawn wagon and sold home grown vegetables in his senior years. But in his younger years he loved a fight and strangers would come to his door and entice him to step outside for a few rounds of bare fisted boxing because Marion had such a reputation. Marion was still a young man of 19 at the close of the Civil War and never attained enough age during the conflict to enlist. However, like most Southerners, he was livid over the presence of Yankee occupation troops all over the South at the close of the War. An oral tradition says one mounted Yankee officer demanded a drink of water from young Marion. Marion refused, whereupon the officer strode his fine prancing horse over beside Marion and kicked him with his boot. The story has it that Marion returned the favor that night while the officer was asleep by cutting the officers throat and stealing his horse. Marion kept the horse until old age and every time the horse heard music he would prance.
