Biography

Zula Mae Blake, the eldest of eight siblings, was born December 22, 1872, in Arkansas, probably in Osage Township, where her parents Larkin Lafayette Blake (1844-1908) and Theda Dixon Crowder (1854-1938) were living at the time of the 1870 US Census. At 19 she married Thomas Graham on November 1, 1891, in Marietta, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, later to become part of Oklahoma. Zula and Tom had three children, Fredda M. Graham (1895-1981), Charles Granville Graham (1903->1942), and Dixie Blake Graham (1907-2002), all born in Oklahoma before it became a state. Dixie was the youngest and last to leave home, marrying in 1931 in Tulsa, where Tom and Zula were then living. Zula and Tom ultimately parted ways, for by 1940 Zula was living with daughter Dixie’s family in Hominy, OK, while Tom lived in Oklahoma City. Zula lived on with her daughter’s family until her death in 1945, which occurred on February 3 in Tulsa. She was buried in Ardmore, OK, where her parents had been buried. (CW)
