Modestus Greisel marries Mary ann Blakely on 18 Sep 1856. Witnesses were Wm M dunnavan and David Mahone. Modestus is 39 and she is 22. He was born and raised in Germany and she was raised in Upton County Indiana. [1]

Page 31 of the census shows M Griessel (52) as the head of the household which includes Mary (36), presumed to be his wife, Mary (16), Ella (15), Theresa (14), Rosa (7), Andrew (5) and Lizzie (2). M is a shoemaker jour, Mary keeps house, Mary is a tailoress and Ella is a domestic servant. M reports he was born in Bavaria and Mary in France. All of the children were born in Kentucky. M, Mary and Ella each report they can neither read or write. The dwelling appears to be shared with the Kranth family, the Clinton family and the Swiggart family.

Page 32 of the census shows Mary (48) and children Theresa (22), Rosa (18), Andrew (15) and Lizzie (13). The home is located at 870 East Walnut, north side. Mary keeps house as does Theresa, Rosa and Andrew are paperhangers and Lizzy goes to school. Mary is widowed. Mary report she and her parents were born in France. The children report they were born in Kentucky and their father in Bavaria.

Mary Greisel is listed as dead at the age of 54 from heart disease on 3 Nov 1885. She was city hospital and was buried in Cave Hill.
