SANTIAGO BLANCHARD is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 12-L: La Ville d'Archangel, arrivee le 3 decembre 1785. He traveled alone, and was listed at the bottom of the plaque under Immigres.[1]
Jacques "Santiago" Blanchard, son of Gabriel Blanchard and Marguerite Conan, was born and baptized on 4 October 1757 during le Grand Derangement.[2]
His marriage record and the passenger list of La Ville Archange both say he was born in Brittany, France.[3][4]
Jacques BLANCHARD was a boatswain, a petty officer in charge of hull maintenance and related work, on board La Ville d'Archangel. The 600-ton ship was constructed at Archangel in 1783, and was built for ten cannon and armed with two. It had two decks and was outfitted by Sieur Dupart GAUTHIER at St. Malo. The captain for the voyage to New Orleans was Sieur Gilles LE GOASTER. The ship departed St. Malo, France on 12 Aug 1785 and arrived in New Orleans on 3 Dec 1785.[5][4]
He received one each of ax, hatchet, hoe, knife, large knife, and three shovels from the Spanish government when he debarked at the Port of New Orleans, with which to start a new life on a land allotment.[6]
Before heading to his land allotment, he married Modeste Aimee BOURG at St. Louis Church in New Orleans, Louisiana on 5 January 1786.[3]
In 1788, He and Modeste and others were enumerated in New Feliciana, Louisiana.[7]
