John was born about 1830 in Aslackby, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of Henry Bland and Elizabeth Gilson. At the time of the 1851 census, John was a visitor to the Hughes family home in Corby, Lincolnshire.[1]
In 1857 John married Maria Pennick at the Catholic church in Everingham, Yorkshire.[2][3] In 1861 John worked as a groom at Houghton Hall in Houghton, Yorkshire, while Maria lived nearby with her mother.[4]
The couple had moved to South Cliffe, Yorkshire, by 1871. John worked as a currier.[5] In 1881 they lived in Eastrington, Yorkshire, where John was a publican.[6] John and Maria had moved again by 1891, when they lived in Hull, Yorkshire, and John was a waggonette driver.[7]
