Biography

William Bland was born 1861 [1] in Wrangle, Lincolnshire, England. He was the son of Anthony Hales Bland and Rebecca (Stone) Bland. [2] He was baptised on 4 January 1863 in Wrangle.[3]

In 1871 William (age 10) was living in Wrangle with his parents and 2 brothers.[2]

Between 1875 and 1881, William's parents, Anthony and Rebecca Bland, moved from Wrangle to Holbeach, Lincolnshire and in 1881 were living there with their 6 youngest children. William was not with them; he had moved to Eston, about 4 miles east of Middlesbrough in Yorkshire. He worked as a general labourer, lodging at 20 South St. [4] By 1891 William's family had made the 150 mile journey north, following him to Eston.

In 1891, William (now aged 30) was living at Codd St., Eston, with his parents and three of his sisters, one of whom had recently married and had a baby. He was a fireman (an engine stoker). [5]

In 1901 William was still living in Eston, lodging at 1, Munby Street. He was a labourer working on pig iron blast furnaces. [6]

In the 1911 census William (age 50) was lodging at the Old Tees Inn, South Bank, a basic worker at the slagworks. [7]

William died in 1915 aged 55 in Middlesbrough. [8] He never married. He was buried on 13 August 1915.[9]
