Biography

Robert L. "Boogie" Bland, 78, previously of Houston, peacefully passed away at his beach home in Galveston on Tuesday morning, December 7, 2004.

Boogie was born on November 23, 1926, in Seattle, Washington. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and upon his return to Seattle, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Washington State. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Catherine Boileau on February 11, 1950, they moved to New York where he received his Masters in Education from Columbia University in 1953. They then moved to Houston where he was a Professor of Human Performance and Health Sciences at Rice University for 38 years. They retired to Galveston where they enjoyed their family, grandchildren, and friends.

Boogie is preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, of 51 years and is survived by his five children, Cecilia and husband, Denny Ruff, of League City, Texas; Mary and husband, Talmadge Hargraves, of Winnie, Texas; Michael and wife, Debra Bland, of Houston, Texas; Boux and his wife, Alecia Bland, of Red Oak, Texas; Dallas and his wife, Michelle, of Houston, Texas; fifteen precious grandchildren, Katelan and Mikaela Schumacher, Bradley, Kelly, and Carrie Hargraves, Cameron and Connor Bland, Abby and Hunter Bland, Caleb, Chelsey, and Caitlan Hunt, and Devon, Shea, and Reanna Bland.

Boogie was a friend to all and had the unique ability of bringing out the best in everyone. He had a passion for life that only a few have realized. He always included his family in every aspect of his life. He especially enjoyed his gaming trips with family and with his close friends, the McDermotts, the Inmans, and Mike Ferns and June. Boogie was fortunate enough to have loved a second person the last two years of his life. The family wishes to give a special thanks to Charlene Kesner for the love she and Boogie shared with one another.

Boogie's family also wishes to extend their grateful appreciation to Nora Merida for the loving care she gave to Boogie as well as his family during his brief illness.[1]
