Rose (Blaney) Irvine has Irish ancestors.

Rose (Blaney) Irvine lived in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

Rose was born in 1871 in Dunedin. She was the eldest daughter of John Blaney and Bridget Hannagan, who had emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland. Rose was educated at the Dominican Convent in Dunedin and had a solid grounding in music. As a child she showed much promise in singing, and performed at public concerts and also performed for visiting Royal Family. She went to Melbourne to study singing further and was a pupil of Madame Lucy Chambers. She returned to Dunedin, but resumed her studies under Madame Chambers in Melbourne in 1894. However Madame Chambers died - Rose was the last pupil to whom the popular music teacher ever gave a lesson. ^[1] It was noted by the media that "Within a very brief period of her first appearance on the concert platform she was generally recognised as possessing musical talent considerably above the average, and this opinion deepened as further opportunities were afforded of judging her capabilities." Rose Blaney married Matthew Irvine in 1903 at St Joseph's Cathedral in Dunedin. The couple moved to London to live for a time, and returned briefly to New Zealand in 1907 when Rose's father died. In London she studied under Madame Minna Fischer. Her husband, Captain Matthew Irvine, was from Dublin, and was previously employed by the Furness Steamship Company in New Zealand. He went on to serve gallantly in World War One and was awarded an OBE.

On returning to New Zealand, Rose took up residence in Wellington.
