.Cornelius was born in Russell County, Kentucky on 3 January 1827. He was the son of John Blankenship and Elizabeth Schick/Sheek. ("Blankenship", Cornelius Blankenship, "Belle Plaine News, Belle Plaine, Kansas, 24 Nov 1910, page 1.) [1][2] He married Elizabeth Ann Lewis probably in Russell County before 1852. This estimate is based on the birthdate of their eldest known child. They had five children togther according to his obituary. Elizabeth died in 1861 (obituary) and Cornelius married Belinda Wilkerson on 30 March 1862 at the home of John D. Wilkerson in Russell County, Kentucky. Witnesses to the wedding were William Blankenship and William N. Wilkerson. [3][1] Cornelius and Belinda had six children together.
Cornelius appeared in the household of his father for the 1830 U.S. Census at Russell County. He was enumerated as a male age under 5. [4]
In the 1840 census at Russell County, Cornelius was listed in his father's household as a male age 10-14. [5]
Cornelius was listed at Russell County in 1850. He was recorded as 23 years old and born in Kentucky. He was living with his wife Elizabeth Ann Blankenship who was recorded as 44 years old, which was a mistake. [6]
In 1860 Cornelius was listed at Jamestown, Russell County. He was recorded as a 33 year old farmer born in Kentucky with real estate valued at $200 and a personal estate of $500. He was living with his wife and children: Hudson, Charles J. and William N. Blankenship. Sarah M. Bean was also living in the household. Living next door was Cornelius's brother David Blankenship. Cornelius was listed at Russell in 1870 as a 44 year old farmer born in Kentucky with real estate valued at $500 and a personal estate of $700. He was living with his second wife Belinda and children: Charles L., William S., John N., Martha J. and Felix Blankenship. Josiah Wilkerson, age 12 was also living in the family. Cornelius's sister Mary Blankenship Lawless was living next door. [8]
In 1880 Cornelius was listed at Russell County as 53 years old. His parents were recorded as born in Kentucky, but this was an error. He was living with his wife Belinda and their children John N., Martha J., Felix, Aaron and Thomas Blankenship. John D. Wilkerson, Belinda Blankenship's father was living with the family also. [9]
Cornelius was listed at Creelsboro, Russell County for the 1900 census. He was recorded as 73 years old, born in Kentucky in January of 1827, married 38 years, his parents again born in Kentucky [sic]. He was able to read and write and was living on his own farm which he owned free of mortgage with his wife Melinda and their son Thomas. His son Aaron was living a few farms away. [10]
Cornelius and Belinda moved to Belle Plaine, Sumner County, Kansas with their son Thomas in about 1903. (obit.) They appeared in the 1905 Kansas State Census at Harmon Township in the household of T. Blankenship. Cornelius was recorded as 78 years old. [11]
Cornelius died in Belle Plaine, Sumner County, Kansas on 17 November 1910 and was buried at Belle Plaine Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Sumner County, Kansas. [2]
