Biography

Richard was born about 1720.

Richard Jr was made sheriff of Spotsylvania, VA in 1767-8. His first duty was to arrest Joseph Craig, Baptist minister for not preaching Church of England. He released him soon afterwards for "causing more mischief" in jail than out of it. Crowds would gather around the jail to listen to Joseph preach.

Children

A previous version of this profile attached, without source, an additional son, George Washington Blanton, for whom there is no evidence. He's been detached.

His brother John was drafted for service in the revolution, but as he was just married and rearing a family, Richard offered to substitute and was accepted.[citation needed]

Research Notes

  • Excerpted from Ermina Jett Darnell's Forks of Elkhorn Church: [1]
"Richard Blanton (son of the first named Richard) was the sheriff of Frederick County, Virginia, and his grandson Harrison Blanton, said that he always told them that the first of his official acts was to apprehend and to confine in jail his friend the Reverend Joseph Craig, for preaching the Baptist Doctrine.
"Richard lived to be over ninety, and probably did not come to Kentucky until long after the arrival of his brother Thomas. One record says he died at the home of his daughter Nancy Crutcher, and that he and his wife, who was Nancy Sneed, were buried in the Grassy Spring churchyard. Another record says they lived in a house on the hill back of his brother Thomas's home, and were buried there in the family graveyard.
"Their children were:
1. John
2. Charles
3. Richard, m. Sally Combs, d. abt. 1809
4. Carter, b. 1765, m. Susanna Snead, d. 1835
5. William, m. Elizabeth Ware
6. James, m. Jane Smith
7. Peggy Vaughn
8. (daughter), m. ____ Daniel
9. Nancy Crutcher"

So I'm seeing a marriage to Joanna, 1749, with David born 1765 and Phoebe born 1770.

Then a marriage to Hannah before 1759, with Charles born 1757, James <1759, Richard 1762, William 1768. And then there's George Washington in 1743 with no mother.

The bio only refers to his grandfather's wife and children, and there aren't any primary sources.

Can anyone sort this out? Because I have no idea what in there is correct.

I notice that "George Washington Blanton" is not listed among the children in the published genealogy.

He's not, and there's a lot of that in this tree. I did a lot of work on the Blantons last month trying to sort out where my Blantons connect, but I had to take a mental health break, lol. Still haven't sorted most of it out.

So should we detach George Washington Blanton as a son?

I'm content just to have him marked uncertain right now. It's possible there's just a wrong birthdate or something going on, since the primary sources are so thin here.

Blanton-2173 and Blanton-337 appear to represent the same person because: they are, but blanton-337 has way more detail & sourced information

Blanton-721 and Blanton-337 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth/death/parents, I think first wife died and remarried to Joanna.

Blanton-507 and Blanton-337 appear to represent the same person because: Same person created through GEDCOM
