recalls being on beach as young girl in Aguilas in 1936 and seeing a British destroyer sailing into port, next thing she and family plus one or two others, all British nationals were on board being evacuated to Gibraltar because of outbreak of Civil War, later went to school at St Hilary's which was evacuated to Thirlestane Castle Lauder during WWII of which she has many happy and interesting memories. One story she was fond of telling was that to keep the girls out of the town the school had a rule that they were not allowed to go through the Eagle gates. Another tale was of when a girl was boasting of her triple barrelled name she gave hers Spanish style- Blazquez de Larrea McEwen Carmona Orozco Quintana Veitch Moya Angeler. They observed the rule as there was a hole in the wall giving them direct access to the town. Later went to Edinburgh art college from where she met her husband. They were married in Edinburgh in 1948 having the reception in her parents garden in Spylaw road at which a number of ambassadors, including Mexican and Colombian attended. Always being independently minded and so as not to waste clothing coupons (rationing still being in operation) she refused to get married in white and had an outfit she could reuse. Her husband had been at college with Sir Robin Philipson , whose portrait of her done in 1950/51 is in images, and they were close friends
