Randolph was the son of Thomas and Edmonia Bledsoe. Randolph's father died when Randolph was 2. After attending Washington and Lee University, Randolph taught history at the New Mexico Military Institute. He died there suddenly at age 24, and was buried in the family plot in Staunton, Virginia.
