William Henry Bligh, a distant relative of an early Governor of NSW sailed to Tasmania in 1833 as a deckhand, he left the ship there and in 1840 crossed Bass Strait and settled in Warrnambool. In 1851 he bought land at Woodford and called the property Molwaden Farm where he farmed for many years. A road in Woodford is called Blighs Road and it appears on an 1856 map of Warrnambool (although unnamed). He received money from England which he used to purchase more land, and he had built the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool which opened 23 April 1872 for which he was the second licensee. Builder was local John Davies.
