Biography

Richard Rodney Bligh son of Captain Richard Bligh and his wife, Anne Page, was baptised at Holy Trinity in Gosport on 8 November 1737. [1] Lieutenant George Brydges Rodney, then 21 years old, standing godfather. [2]

He followed his father into the Royal Navy in 1750 with his godfather aboard HMS Rainbow.[3]

Richard was a resident of Wickham in Hampshire when in 1765 he signed the marriage allegation for his wedding to Anne Worsley, daughter of Sir Edward Worsley and his wife, Elizabeth Miller . [4] They were married at Gatcombe on the Isle of Wight on the 13th of November. [5]

By 1754 he had risen through the rank of the navy and was appointed that year to the command of HMS Alexander, with his ship in danger of sinking during an engagement with the French he struck his colours and was taken prisoner returning to England in May 1795 after having been exchanged. He had, in the meantime, been raised to the rank of Admiral but still had to suffer a court martial for the loss of his ship. He was acquitted with honour. [6]

Ann Bligh died 7 July 1797 [7] and on 28 July 1800 at All Saints in Kingston upon Thames Richard married Mary Golightly. [8]

His son, George, was appointed Lieutenant aboard HMS Victory on 10 April 1803[9] the ship that Admiral Nelson made his flag-ship on the 18th. [10]Any Naval Officer would have been proud to have his son serve with Nelson at Trafalgar and George soon recovered from the chest injury he sustained from a musket ball that day. [11]

Richard died 30 April 1821 [12] at Belle Vue in Southampton. [13][14]
