While home on leave in early 1864, George Smith married Jane Bliss Feb 20th. When the regiment returned in early spring, their first major offensive was the Battle of the Wilderness. George Albert was killed during the battle on 5 May 1863 in the Wilderness ten miles west of Fredericksburg VA. In 1867 Grant County erected a monument to the slain soldiers of the Civil War in the court house square. George Albert Smith’s name is inscribed with the 7th Wisconsin Regiment from the county. Jane and Albert had no children.
26 Dec 1866, Jane married her first cousin Lyman Varney. They moved to Iowa by 1870. Jane died 1 Jan 1932 in Englewood, Arapahoe Co.,CO. Children of Jane and Lyman: Frank H Varney 1869-1924, Genevieve Varney 1871-1952, Mabel Varney 1884-deceased
