His obituary in the 20 September 1911 edition of the Herald News reads [9]:

Grim Reaper Gathers Old Residents.

The grim reaper made his appearance twice within a week at Frankfort taking two of the oldest residents in this community. Wm. Block, one of Frankfort's well and widely known citizens was stricken early in the week and passed away Thursday, the day his sister, Mrs. Henry Schroeder, who died Monday, was being buried. Mr. Block had been in feeble health for some time and just prior to his death underwent an operation. Mr. Block was one of the sturdy German settlers who was instrumental in the up building of Frankfort township and was also connected with the St. Peters' German Evangelical church, of which he was a strong adherent and served in the capacity of trustee which office he held until the time of his death. He had attended to his duties last Sunday, Sept. 10, and was stricken shortly after. The funeral services were Sunday afternoon at the late home and were concluded at the St. Peter's German Evangelical church with Rev. Mr. Lambrecht officiating. Burial in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

Wm. Block was born in Knippeldamm, Germany, Jan. 2, 1843. He immigrated to America October 1865, and settled in Green Garden township where he engaged in farming. In January 1866 he was united in marriage with Miss Sophia Frentz, who died some years ago. To this union nine children, four sons and five daughters, were born, the sons and two daughters, Mrs. Paulson and Mrs. Breidert passing away some time ago. Two of the sons were burned to death in a corn crib fire in their infancy. The deceased engaged in farming until 1895, when he retired and bought a home in Frankfort, where he has since resided. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Andrew Krauss of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Genenesk of Peotone and Mrs. Fred Fink of Frankfort; twenty-five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one sister who resides in the east.

Research Notes

  • He arrived in the United States with his wife Sophia and daughter Marie, but was not listed with them when he departed. I suspect Sophia and Marie were Sophia and Marie Töpper, wife and daughter of Ludwig Töpper, on the Hamburg list. Ludwig Tobbe was listed under Wilhelm and family on the arrival list. -Jamie Nelson-3486 16:08, 21 April 2024 (UTC)
