Biography

Lucy Elizabeth (Blomfield) Bather was an English writer for children, known as 'Aunt Lucy'.

Lucy Elizabeth Blomfield was born 31 Mar 1830 at Fulham Palace in Fulham, London, England to Charles James Blomfield, the bishop of London, and his wife Dorothy (Cox) Blomfield.

Lucy's education, like that of her brothers and sisters, was watched, and to some extent conducted, by their father, and she learned something of the classical languages.

In 1841 Lucey Blomfield (age 11) and her sister Isabella (16-20) lived at Kemp Town in Brighton, Sussex - possibly at a school.[1] Her parents and a few siblings were living at Bishop London Place in Fulham.

In 1851 Lucy Elizabeth Blomfield (age 20) lived at St James Square in Saint James Westminster with her father Charles James (64, Bishop of London), mother Dorathy (58), and four siblings: Francis (23, Student at Law), Arthur Wm (22, Studying in an Architects Office), Charles F (19, Articled to a Solicitor), and Dorothy Esther (15), as well as numerous servants.[2]

Lucy's father passed away on 5 Aug 1857.

In 1861 Lucy E Blomfield (age 30) lived at Lansdowne Place in Richmond, Surrey with her mother Dorothy (68, Fundholder), two siblings: Henry (35, Commander RN 1/2 Pay) and Dorothy (25), two visitors: John Cox (70, Rector of Fairstead Essey) and Sarah Baston (37, Invalid Nurse), and six servants: John Hamer (44, Baker), Elizabeth M Barlow (33, Cook), Betsy Anthony (30, Ladys Maid), Mary Briston (28, Housemaid), Elizabeth Warren (20, Kitchen Maid), and William Haviland (15, Page).[3]

L.E.B. aka 'Aunt Lucy' published "Footprints on the Sands of Time: Biographies for Young People" in 1860 - it was dedicated to her nephews and nieces.[4]

Lucy Elizabeth Blomfield (age 31, daughter of Charles James Blomfield) married Arthur Henry Bather of Meole Brace, Shropshire (age 31, son of John Bather) on 29 Aug 1861 in Richmond.[5] The marriage was registered in Richmond in the third quarter of the year.[6]

Lucy and Arthur had one son: the palaeontologist, geologist and malacologist Francis Arthur Bather (1863-1934).

Lucy Elizabeth Bather passed away on 5 Sep 1864 at The Hall, Meole Brace, near Shrewsbury, after a short illness. Her death was registered in Shrewsbury in the third quarter of the year.[7]
