Biography
Charles was born in Winona, Mississippi on 19 Nov 1884. His father was Charles F. Blount of Carrollton, Mississippi.[1]
He was married at the time he registered for the World War I draft in Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama. He was working as an iron worker for Westinghouse. He listed his next of kin as his wife, but he gave her name as "Mrs. Chas. K. Blount."[2]
The 1920 Census was enumerated in Jan 1920, and at that time, Charles, Beulah, and Beulah's two daughters, Madge and Mary, were living on Elysian Fields Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana.[3] In Dec 1920, Charles gave his address as 1160 Camp St. in New Orleans, Louisiana when he applied for a passport for travel to Tampico, Mexico for his employer, The Foundation Company, to work on a constructions project. Two of his friends who vouched for him were Lemuel Mead and H.C. Edwards.[1]
In March 1923, Charles returned home from Belize, British Honduras aboard the Lysefjord. There is nothing to indicate why he had traveled to Belize, but given his previous work history, it is likely it had something to do with his employment.[4]
The 1930 Census in New Orleans was enumerated on 2 Apr. Charles was lodging in the household of Martin and Agnes Rasmussen at 3304 Banks St. in New Orleans. He indicated that he was married,[5] but Beulah was enumerated on 12 Apr in Memphis, Tennessee, where she was living with her widowed daughter, Frances. Beulah also indicated that she was widowed.[6]
Charles died on 16 Nov 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The transcription of his obituary listed his mother, Mrs. S.A. Armstrong, and two "brothers" [sic], James W Amstrong and Martha'S Amstrong [sic][7]
Research Notes
There is a note on the 1900 Census on Ancestry that shows a "Charley B Armstrong" in the household of Eugene Armstrong and his wife Sophia in Durant, Mississippi. The note indicates that "Charley's" last name should be Blount, and that Sophia's maiden name was Jones. It also says that Charles F. Blount was Charles' father. Sophia was born in North Carolina.[8][9]
