Marjorie, first born to the John L. Blount family, and it is not entirely clear whom she is named after, was born at 4:10 a.m. in Houston in 1915. She was the oldest of the four Blount children. Her parents assigned and was accepted by Mrs. J.P. Jones to be the godmother. She was christened on June 4, 1915 by Rev. A.W. Carr at Trinity M.E. Church. Her parents kept accurate notation of first events in the baby's life. The first card came from Georgia Morrow, first telegram from her grandfather's wife, Mrs. Anderson Hoyt Richey, her first smile was March 28. Lastly, the baby had her first automobile ride on June 4 with Dr. B.J. Covington and others in his big Cadillac. Her aunts Mattie Blount and Willie Blount gave her gifts. Many more anecdotes capture Marjorie's early life as documented in her Baby Book. As I remember, my mother spoke of her older sister infrequently, perhaps in fact, only once or twice. Mainly out of sorrow I suspect. Horribly, because of the strict segregation rules in general and specifically, in Texas, she was not allowed to the white hospital closest to the college she attended-- Wiley College. Instead, and loosing time, she was rushed back to Houston but died in transit or at the Black hospital in the city. Not knowing the cause, we suspect she fell victim to typhoid fever as there was an out break at school. I recall my mother chastising me for drinking cold water on an extremely hot day and somehow that memory is tied into Marjorie's incident. From any and all family members, we are seeking additional information regarding her young life full of so much promise and potential- then tragically cut far too short. Decades later in 2007, Wiley College http://www.wileyc.edu/ was made famous in the movie, "The Great Debaters" starring Denzel Washington. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Debaters This was the same college Marjorie had attended and over the years along with many other relatives primarily on the Blount side. Marjorie's untimely death preceded the actual debate championship of 1935; however, most certainly she was on campus concurrent with Professor Melvin Tolson and the debate team leading up to their great victory.
