From the 1840 Will of Michael Blue of Hampshire, Virginia: "First, I give to my beloved wife the one third part of all my land. I give the following slaves, Daniel, Barbara, Phoebe, Elizabeth, Phillis, Rebecca & Louise.....9th. I give and bequeath to my son Garret, Negro Charles and after the death of his mother, Louise."[1] [2]
The Slave Schedule for the estate of Garret Blue in Hampshire VA, dated 20 Oct 1860, includes: Louisa, 20 Female Mulatto. She is listed immediately after Charles, 24 Male Mulatto, and immediately before Harriet, 1 Female Mulatto.[3] The 3 certainly look like a family.
The Bible of Thomas Blue of Hampshire, Virginia lists many of the enslaved people who belonged to Michael Blue and then to his wife and children. The list includes "Negro Charles of Phebe born Jan 24, 1831" and "Negro Loueazer of Elizabeth born Jan 4, 1839." Likely, these are the Charles and Louise named in the 1840 will and the 1860 slave schedule.
