Biography

Guion "Guy" Stewart Bluford Jr. is an American aerospace engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer and fighter pilot, and former NASA astronaut, who was the first African American in space.[1]

1942 Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, one of four sons of Guion S. Bluford and Harriet Lolita (Brice) Bluford.[2][3]
1964 Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering, Pennsylvania State University; enrolled in ROTC, attended flight school. Married Linda Tull.[4][3]
1966 Assigned to the 557th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and flew 144 combat missions.[3]
1974 Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering, U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology. During his Air Force career, he was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal (1984), the Legion of Merit (1993), three Defense Meritorious Service Medals (1986, 1992 and 1993), the Meritorious Service Medal (1978), ten Air Medals (1967) and the National Defense Service Medal (1965).
