During the late 1870s there was a recruitment drive for the mining industry. A huge number of Cornish sailing families were recruited to work in the mines around Whitehaven. Richard Thomas and his family together with his wife’s parents, john & Emma Jeffery, moved to become miners.
She passed away in 1895, aged 68. [4]
