James Bly and his family moved from Richland County, Ohio to William County in 1879 and settled on a farm in Jefferson Township, near the town of West Unity. James was a well-known farmer and served as a township trustee. He became prosperous enough to be one of the first people in the county to own an automobile about 1915. He and his family were members of the Methodist Church in West Unity, Ohio. Two of James's and Sarah's children died in a diphtheria epidemic in the spring of 1885.
