John Bly was born in Shelby County, Illinois, oldest child of Samuel and Margaret, married there and was a farmer. About 1911 he and his family moved to Mott, North Dakota, to homestead, but he died there in December 1914 and the following year his widow and children moved on west to eastern Washington and settled near the town of Dayton.
