Emily was born in 1850^[1] in York, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her parents, Matthew John Blythe and Sarah Clark, in 1851^[2] and 1861.^[3] At the time of the 1871 census she lived with her maternal grandmother, Susan Clark, in York.^[4]

In 1878 Emily married John Swale^[5] in Barlby, Yorkshire.^[6] The family lived in Gomersal, Yorkshire, in 1881, when John worked as a draper.^[7]

By 1891 they had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, where John was a grocer.^[8] In 1901 he was a confectioner's clerk and the family lived on Avenue Terrace in York, Yorkshire.^[9][10]
