Emily was born in 1850[1] in York, Yorkshire, England, where she lived with her parents, Matthew John Blythe and Sarah Clark, in 1851[2] and 1861.[3] At the time of the 1871 census she lived with her maternal grandmother, Susan Clark, in York.[4]
In 1878 Emily married John Swale[5] in Barlby, Yorkshire.[6] The family lived in Gomersal, Yorkshire, in 1881, when John worked as a draper.[7]
By 1891 they had moved to Eastrington, Yorkshire, where John was a grocer.[8] In 1901 he was a confectioner's clerk and the family lived on Avenue Terrace in York, Yorkshire.[9][10]
