John was born in 1891 to Charles and Caroline (Kilbourn) Boardman. The family would move from Vermont to California before 1910 where Charles bought a farm. John would help his father and on January 2, 1918, he would marry Edith. They were unable to have children of their own so, on June 17, 1929, they would adopt three children, all natural siblings. Dorothy was 11 at the time of being adopted, Jack was 10 and Marjorie was 4.
John would continue farming in Central California while he and Edith raised their family. Later they would move to the Santa Cruz, California, area and become property caretakers. Edith would pass away in 1965. John would follow her 21 years later in 1986.
