My family and I lived in Grandpa Riley’s old house when I was 16. We all like that house because it was so large. It had a fireplace in every room of the house. A typical country home with a large porch on the front and side and in the back. The kitchen was separated from the rest of the house along with the dinning room. I remember it had a wood burning stove in the kitchen and it also had an electric stove in it that Mom used to cook with. That was the house that burned when we were living there. That night my boyfriend spent the night at our house to help Dad gather some wood. We stayed up late that night until the fire was completely out in the living room. I believe it was around one or 1:30 in the morning before we went to bed. Later in the night I was awaken staring at a small hole in the wall in my bedroom. When I realized the house was on fire I ran across the hall and told Mom and Dad. The house was already in flames. We got out of the house in a matter of minutes when the fire broke out the windows. It was in the middle of December and it was cold and we all had only our sleeping cloths on and no shoes. We were told later it was started by old wiring in the house. Jerry later told me that Dad had found a bag of silver dollars that had melted together in the walls of the house. Dad didn’t think it was any good and threw them away. He said you could still see the faces on some of them. Source: Sue Carol Boatright (great-grand daughter of John Riley Boatright)
