Biography

Rothaide de Bobbio is shown by secondary sources as the daughter of Walacher (Wala) de Bobbio and his wife Rotlinde de Gellone. [citation needed]

A family tree at genealogieonline.nl (UNRELIABLE SOURCE) shows Rothaide's father's name as "Walacher I van Corbie", associated with Bobbio, Provincio di Piacenza, Italy.[1]

Wala is mentioned as a half brother of Chrothais, mistress of Pepin I (Carloman) -- not to be confused with the husband of the woman of this profile -- was named Chrothais,[2] of whom Settipani states her name is provided by a litany of Reichenau and that she was without doubt a close relative of Adalhard de Corbie and of her half brother Wala, the future protectors of Bernard of Italy. [3]

Bobbio is located in Northern Italy.

Some sources show Rothaide de Bobbio as the wife of Pepin de Vermandois. This is a surprising connection, given the geographical distance between Bobbio and Vermandois, and the fact that no reason is provided as to why Pepin should seek a spouse from so far.

Because a marriage between Rothaide and Pepin has no documentation and appears unreasonable, they have been de-linked as spouses.

Discussion: Wife of Pepin

In addition, another woman is also shown as Pepin's spouse and the mother of his children: Unknown du Vexin. Vexin is in the same geographical area as Vermandois and the combination is much more likely.

Therefore, while Pepin (d. after 840) married an unidentifed woman. Her parents are unknown.

Cawley citing Settipani (2006), conjectures that Pepin's wife may have been from the "du Vexin" family.[4][5][2] The following information outlines theories discussing her parentage.

Cawley (2006) citing Settipani:[6]

Pepin's wife surname possibly "du Vexin" ... adds that Settipani suggests she was [du Vexin], daughter of Theodoric, son of Nibelung, Comte du Vexin ... bearing in mind that Pépin's descendants inherited estates in the Vexin.

Wikipedia:[7]

Pepin's heir inherited much Nibelungid territory and so Werner hypothesized marriage to a daughter of Theodoric Nibelung.

Baldwin (2006):[2]

Comments on the conjecture linking Pepin's wife with the "Nibelungen" family (descendants of Childrebrand, son of Charles Martel), and states it's based on possessions of Heribert I's predecessors, as well as the use of the name "Heribert" in that family[8]

Name and DOB

  • b. c. 825 -- Assuming she married Pepin (d. after 840), he was born about 815(?).[citation needed] An unsourced date of marriage is about 845. If she were 20 when she married, she would have been born about 825.
  • children born in the time frame 836-854.[citation needed]

Duplicates

Pepin only has 1 wife... She's UNKNOWN.[6]
  • Unknown du Vexin. Born 825. No parents. No children linked.
born Vermandois 820, daughter of Wala Bobbio and Rotlinde de Gellone. Died 15 June 858, Milan. No children linked. Wikipedia reports that Pepin's wife has been spuriously called "Rothaide de Bobbio". [7] It is speculation that she married Pepin I, Seigneur de Péronne et de Saint-Quentin[5]

The sources for a Rothaide who came from Bobbio in Northern Italy are weak, but Rothaide appears here and there in various genealogies. Therefore I believe there is merit for retaining a profile for Rothaide. There is no documentation that Rothaide married Pepin, nor any explanation as to why he would have sought a wife in northern Italy. I believe in the absence of such documentation, all discussion of who Pepin's wife might be belongs on Pepin's profile. There is another profile which contains what may be known of the other woman conjectured as Pepin's wife, Vexin-43. Neither profile is now actually linked to Pepin as that of a spouse.

Just to be clear du Vexin, is Charles Cawley's name for this family, it's not the name Settipani uses and that's why it is probably in square brackets. If anything Settipani refers to the family as Nibelungen. I think we are in danger of misinterpreting Cawley and using a name Vexin that is unsupported by any other sources.

I have reviewed Pepin and his purported wives from the major sources and my conclusion is this -- there was most likely a real person Unknown de Vexin and another real person Rotaide, which deserve to have their profiles continue. Since we believe Pepin only had one wife, I propose to delink BOTH of them as wives in the data field, and put cross-links in the biographical narrative to both. The third putative wife I do not believe is a separate person and should be merged with de Vexin. Please let me know if anyone sees problems with this course of action. Thanks!

Time to merge out... all three are entirely speculative, when there's only one wife.
