Biography

Sally Vrancart, originally known as Slowka Bodnar, was born on January 27, 1919, in Kotowanie, Poland. Her early life was marked by Ukrainian heritage, as she lived near Lviv, Ukraine, close to the Polish border. At the age of 9, Sally immigrated to Canada aboard the ship Franconia, which departed from Liverpool, England, and arrived in Halifax on August 18, 1928. Accompanied by her mother and stepbrother Joseph Macan, they continued their journey by train to Wolsely, Saskatchewan. Her stepfather, Thomas Macan, had already gone ahead to Saskatchewan and awaited their arrival.

In Canada, Sally eventually settled in Toronto around 1940. She was a bright and driven individual who worked as a waitress at the Studleigh Restaurant in Toronto, where fate intervened. On a blind date, she met Frank Vrancart, and their connection blossomed. They married in 1941, and Sally took on the last name of her stepfather, becoming Sally Macan until her marriage to Frank.

Sally’s career path was diverse: she worked as a comptometer operator at Simpsons Department Store and later became a supervisor at Lux Time, where they manufactured clocks for stoves in Oakville, Ontario. Her love for Canada was unwavering, but she also maintained connections with her cousins in the Swedesboro, New Jersey area.

Sally Vrancart passed away peacefully on September 7, 2001, at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. She was a beloved wife, a devoted mother to Ron and Albert Vrancart, and a proud grandmother to Kate, Megan, Joanna Vrancart, and Danny Gellman12.

Her life journey—from Poland to Canada—reflects resilience, adaptability, and the bonds that tie families across borders. 🌟🇨🇦
