(The following is added by Jim Boettcher-Sometimes the fastest way to find out the correct data is to post wrong data. But the following is what I remember hearing.)
Julius's father died when Julius was 9 years old, sometime after that he went to live with an older brother (The census documents dated June 11, 1900 show he was not living with his mother at that time, age 10.) At age 15 (not sure if he completed 8th grade, which was all that was required then. UPDATE - Julius only had a 3rd grade education, which would mean that once his Dad died and he went to live with his bother, he never attended more school), Julius bought a motorcycle and ended up working on a farm in the 'western plains' of Canada where some farmer wanted to adopt him. Julius also spent some time in California before returning to Minnesota. When he returned he lived with another brother before marrying and moving to rural Stacy/North Branch. The also lived briefly in Cambridge before moving to rural Stacy. Julius bought 80 acres from his brother Louis in 1916 (as of 2013, part of that farm is still in the family). For the first 4 years they lived in a rented house across the street from their land and built the house in 1920 by borrowing money from Julius's step-father. Julius bought and sold other acreage in the area before selling the farm to a son in about 1956 due to health reasons.
(Information supplied by Betty Boettcher Kirvin's family history: He mined coal in Canada, worked in a cold storage plant in Los Angeles, and for Swift and Company with his brother William. Julius and Alma lived in Cambridge, Minnesota until the United States entered World War I, at which time they moved to a farm near Typo Lake to be a little more secure from the draft. In 1920 or 1921 they built a home on Section 29 of Linwood Township in Anoka County, where they farmed until the fall of 1956 when they retired to Wyoming, Minnesota. They had three sons, Eugene, Vernon, and Melvin. Julius died at home on August 2, 1974. Alma moved to a mobile home on the home farm with Vernon and Fern, where she lived until 1990. Julius and Alma are buried in the Oxford Union Cemetery in Isanti County.)
