Biography

Francis was born in Londonderry, Ireland in 1702.

Marriage

Francis married Agnes Colins about 1720 in Londonderry, Ireland.[1] Agnes' maiden name was found by some family researchers as 'Houlahan'. 'Collins' has also been found as her last name. Both names may be correct and belong to two different women or Agnes was married twice.

Issue of this marriage

(first two born in Ireland, the rest in Delaware.)

  1. William Boggs (1721-c 1786) Ireland
  2. Robert Boggs (1722-1763) Ireland
  3. James Charles Boggs (1725-Feb 1805) m. Margaret Jane Sharp 01/25/1751 James and Margaret had son Ezekial who married "a branch cousin" Margret Boggs. Ezekial and Margret had a son name James who married Jane White. James and Jane had a son named William M. who married Sarah Pyles.
  4. Francis Charles Boggs (c1727-c 1795) m. Martha Elliot 1760
  5. Ezekiel Boggs (1734-06 Jun 1815) m. Jane Johnson 1756
  6. Joseph (c.1737-)
  7. Agnes Boggs (c1740-1776) m. David Filson Aug 15 1762
  8. Samuel Boggs (c1742-1815)

Francis, his wife Agnes, his widowed father James, four brothers and sisters, and his two young sons emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland to New Castle County, Delaware, in 1724.

"The first Scotch-Irish group settlements in Pennsylvania were made in the western part of Chester County, in Lancaster County, and in the southern part of Dauphin County, as we know these districts, though they were all embraced in Chester County until 1729. The earliest of these settlements were effected at Fagg's Manors, New London, and Octorara, in the western part of present Chester County, beginning in 1710..." [2] The above lends credence to the claim of Francis Boggs, Sr.(1702-1763) having resided in Chester Co., PA.

Upon the death of his father (James), Francis moved to Doe Run, East Fallowfield township, Chester County, PA. in 1737, settling on the West bank of the Brandywine River where he was a miller. Francis and John Tilson founded the Doe Run Presbyterian Church on Strasbourg Road.

Francis Boggs and John Tilson founded the Doe Run Presbyterian Church on Strasbourg Road EAst Fallowfield Twp., Chester Co., Pennsylvania.

Francis passed away in Doe Run in 1763 leaving his widow Agnes, and nine children to grieve. Francis has a memorial on Find A Grave. [3]

HIs son William Boggs helped Agnes administer his estate.

While it hasn't been proven that Frances is the son of the Immigrant James Augustus Boggs the supposition is supported in several ways.

Virginia 1790 Federal Census: Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States taken in the year 1790; Records of the State Enumerations: 1782 to 1785 Virginia; Heads of Families, Virginia, 1782; Greenbrier County: Boggs, Francis, Senior. also listed: Boggs, Francis, Junior.

Records pertaining to Francis and Agnes Boggs and their son William and his heirs are in the Chester Co., Pennsylvania. County records.

Frances died interstate (no will) and left no record of his children. However his wife Agnes and son William are mentioned in a letter of Administration in lieu of a Will to bind themselves as Heirs of the Late Francis Boggs. (See Below)

LETTER OF ADMINISTRATION (in lieu of a Will): Know all Men by these Presents, That we Agnes Boggs, William Boggs, John Montgomery and John Bentley, all of the County of Chester, in the Province of Pennsylvania, are held and firmly bound unto William Plumsted, Esq.: Register-General for the Probate ___? DNA Research

The following info is from Family Search and the DNA project is at FTDNA. The Boggs group can be found on Facebook.

"...many researchers thought it was likely that Francis Boggs (1702-1762) was the son of James Boggs of White Clay also called the Immigrant. Y-DNA indicates that Francis could not be a son of James. We have made some breakthroughs in Y-DNA testing. If you are male Boggs, you should consider doing a YDNA test at FTDNA. I am the administrator and would gladly advise you which test are appropriate." Frank Boggs.

We have not found proof of an actual link to this Francis other than our James named his second son Francis, and Francis (Jr.) was born in Chester Co., Pennsylvania according to Francis' Revolutionary War pension application. This is the Francis who married Mary Clendennin and lived in Kanawha (later Nicholas, later Braxton) Co." Francis was thought to be a son of James Boggs and Rebecca Moray. However, Frank Boggs states this:

"I will add that many research[sic] thought it was likely that Francis Boggs (1702-1762) was the son of James Boggs of White Clay also called the Immigrant. Y-DNA indicates that Francis could not be a son of James. We have made some breakthroughs in Y-DNA testing. If you are male Boggs, you should consider doing a YDNA test at FTDNA. I am the administrator and would gladly advise you which test are appropriate. Frank Boggs"

Francis Boggs, Sr., according to family group sheets by H. Kent Lewis, Francis died circa 1795 in Greenbrier County, VA.

Boggs Family Genealogy Forum; posted by John Skidmore Archer July 20, 1998: States that Francis died in Chester County, Pennsylvania, 1763, survived by wife.

As for the Francis Boggs family, we only know that William Boggs, age 89 (d. 1833), Rebecca Boggs, age 84, and Elizabeth Boggs, age 87 & both died in 1835), are buried in the New Side Cemetery of Upper Octorara. (where...which state?)
