Biography

Mary was born about 1828. She was the daughter of Joseph Bogue and Nancy Asher.

She is recorded in the 1850 census in the household of Jacob Crousore, at age 21. Rhoda, her older sister, was Jacob's wife.

She is recorded in the 1860 census of Madison, IN. Peninah Bogue, 34, was working as a domestic servant in the household of Malon and July A Norris. [1]

She married Henry H. Denton, Feb 15 1866.[2][3][4] Henry was born around 1817 in KY; both of his parents were from Tennessee. They had two sons:

Lewis Thomas Denton 1868-
Jacob McKinley Denton 1870- (married Mary E Conwell)

After her brother Thomas Bogue's death in the Civil War, she was listed as a witness to the identity of his minor children with his first wife Eunice Garner on pension documents.[5]

In 1880 she is Panina M. Denton, 51, and Henry Denton is 63. Two children are listed, Lewis and Jacob, 11 and 10, and her sister Lyda/Lydia Boguewas living with them. Also nearby on the same census page was her brother Lewis and his family.

Henry died in 1896. Peninah's death date is unknown.

Research Notes

Some indication she used Peninah rather than Mary, but Mary P. is on the marriage records.

She was apparently the second wife of Henry. First was Margaret Philips b. 1817, and he had two children with her, Sarah and Joseph. Henry is buried in Marion National Cemetery (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/2861392/henry-h-denton) and daughter Sarah is linked to his memorial.
