Edith Odell Bogues was born Jan. 19, 1927, to the late Luther Bogues and Carrie Mercer, in Camden County, N.C. She was seventh of 11 children. All were raised in a Christian household filled with love and respect for one another. Edith attended the public schools in Camden County and united with New Sawyer's Creek Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. Upon moving to Connecticut, she attended and was a dedicated member of Way of the Cross Church in Waterbury. Edith shared her love with her husband, Edward (Ham) Walton; sisters Vivian Jones, Mary Jane Gregory and Addie Mae Bogues; and brother Luther Lee Bogues Jr., all of whom preceded her in death. Edith was a great cook and the heart and soul of her family. She worked at Uniroyal of Naugatuck for many years, Scovill Manufacturing in Waterbury and Pratt & Whitney in Southington. After she retired, Edith traveled frequently to visit family and friends throughout the South, Midwest and Florida. If there was a cruise ship leaving for the Caribbean Islands for the yearly family reunions, she was on it.

During the early hours of Saturday, August 16, 2008, Mrs. Edith Odell Walton bade farewell and gracefully entered the promised land of eternity. She was a very caring and sharing person with a rhythm all her own. She loved her God, her family and her church. Her home, heart, wit and wisdom were open to all the good people she encountered throughout her life.

Edith leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Sophie and Deborah Walton; four sons, Cardell Bogues, Edward, Fred and Al Walton, all of Waterbury; four sisters, Mildred Trafton and Pennie Equilla Bailey of Camden, N.C., Annie Spellman and Dorothy (John) Scott of Wolcott; two brothers, Alexander (Ella Mae) Bogues of Waterbury and William Leon (Ruth) Bogues of Camden, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Shannon Bogues of Killeen, Texas, Angela Glisson of Hartford, Dale and Damian Saunders, Edward IV, Erik and Elise Walton, Cannea Ferguson, all of Waterbury; 11 great-grandchildren; two goddaughters; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. A funeral service will be held Monday, Aug. 25, at Zion Baptist Church, 127 Pearl St. Burial will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hour will be held Monday, Aug. 25, at the church. The family will receive friends at the church until the time of service and all other times at the home of her daughter, Sophie Walton, 101-5 Stonefield Dr., Waterbury. Arrangements are entrusted to Pender Funeral Service LLC, 95 Dixwell Ave., New Haven.^[1]
