My father and mother met in 1920 during the annual "Old Settlers' Reunion". The Lockharts were camped on high ground above the San Gabriel River and the Bohanans were camped closer to the river. Heavy rains upstream on both the North and South San Gabriel rivers flash-flooded the camp grounds. Those camped on higher grounds were able to rescue most of those on lower grounds but they lost all possessions. My dad pulled my mom from the raging river on horse back. He was 15, she 14. They attended different rural schools, my mom's school was west of Georgetown, Texas; my dad's near Florence, northwest of Georgetown. Both schools had the same teacher that alternated between the two schools. She carried notes back and forth they had written using the names "Dutch"and "Buddy". My mom was Dutch, my dad was Buddy. My dad left home at 16; worked on a cattle ranch in west Texas; returned to Williamson County and married mom in 1925. My older sister was named after that teacher.
