Biography

NOTE: It appears Ambrose Bohannon, Sr. was born circa 1690 based on likely birth years of his children. If he were born in 1660 he would have been about 93 when they died (quite unlikely that persons born in the late 1600's would live into their early 90's. Also his wife likely would not have been at least 35 years older than Ambrose, so his wife likely was born a number of years earlier than 1725. - Jim Miller

Ambrose Bohannon, of Scotland, settled in Gloucester county (in that part now called Mathews County -- town is now Bohannon, Virginia). He married, first, Miss Lafond, a French Huguenot, by whom he had Colonel Joseph Bohannon, of Essex county (grandfather of Dr. Thomas Bohannon, of Louisville,KY), and Ambrose Bohannon, a quartermaster during the Revolution. He married, second, Elizabeth Gregory, by whom he had William Bohannon (grandfather of Dr. John G. Bohannon, of South Norwalk CONN). His will, dated January 18, 1753, and proved 2/22/1753, names four children -- Joseph, Dorothy, Sarah and that which my wife is now with child, execotrs wife Elizabeth Bohannon, Abram Iveson, John Matthews, and Richard Gregory. The will of Ambrose Bohannon, of Essex County, dated 2/24/1776, witnesses Thomas Miller, William Miller, Dorothy Miller, proved 12/15/1800, devises all his land to his brother Joseph Bohannon. [1]

Ambrose's will, dated January 18, 1753, proved February 22, 1753, named four children, Joseph, Dorothy, Sarah, and "that which my wife is now with child."This would suggest that William was not yet born at the time of the will.

Ambrose's executors were wife Elizabeth (Gregory) Bohannon, Abraham Iveson, John Matthews, and Richard Gregory (Elizabeth's brother).
