Jeremiah Boland, born about 1791, was a farmer in Cashel, Tipperary, Ireland, before emigrating to Upper Canada (Ontario) with the Peter Robinson settlers. He, his wife Mary, and their four children boarded the ship 'John Barry' which departed the Cove of Cork 23rd May 1825 and arrived at Quebec 6th July 1825. The settlers then proceeded to Montreal aboard the steamboat New Swiftsure on 8th July 1825. Various ship lists have a daughter Ann with them, some don't.
The ship's surgeon described Jeremiah as "a well conducted, proper man."[1]
An extract from the application to be part of the Peter Robinson Settlers "We, the undersigned magistrates know the bearer, Jeremiah Boland, a native inhabitant of the City of Cashel for a long period of years. He has a wife and four children, their ages 18, 14, 7, and 5 years. The said Jeremiah Boland being inclined to go out to that part of His Majesty's Dominion called Canada in North America, and having applied to us for a testimonial of character, we have no hesitation recommending him for an honest, well conducted and local man".[1]
The ages of the children in extract above are different than what are on ship lists, the extract only lists 4 ages where most versions of the ship lists, list 5 children. This impacts the discussion below about Ann Roldin or Boland if she is 14 versus 4 than a potential she is her daughter.
There are family trees at Family Search and Ancestry however the children's trees are very different in both places, especially for son Thomas Boland born in 1823. The trees have different maiden names for Jeremiah's wife. Some family trees have Ann Roldin or Boland as a daughter, which has a birth year of 1811 in Ireland. The Ann that does show on some of the ship lists would have a birth year of 1821, which would not work with the children ages of Ann Roldin or Boland. I do not think there are enough sources to conclude she is a daughter, more documents have her name listed as Roldin than Boland.
