330 Biogtaphical Sketch of Michael Reap photo facing page 330C
Michael Reap was born in Ballycastle, County Mayo, Ireland on the 21st of September 1821 and died in Pittston, Luzern County, PA MAy 11th 1878. On landing in this country, in 1840, he had only 2 British pennies in his pocket and had but limited opportunities for education in his boyhood. He immediately sought and obtained work on the Erie Canal. Subsequently he labored on a farm in Blakely Township and in the fall of 1842 obtained employment at a blast furnace in Scranton, where by his industry and application he reached the position of keeper of the furnace, at .50 per day, which compensation was large in comparison to the prices paid for labor at the time. After leaving the furnace he opened a small grocery and in 1851 in connection with Mr. Thomas Benedict, started in Pittston a general country store under the firm name of Reap and Benedict. In 1865 Mr. Benedict retired and Mr. Reap continued the business until 1867 when he was succeeded by his son and nephew. He retired from his mercantile pursuits having accumulate by his own indomitable energy and good business qualifications what was considered a snug fortune.
He gave generously of his time and money to aid in building up his adopted town, Pittston. He was seven times elected burgess of the burough. He was active and instrumental in introducing gas and water into the borough and was president of the Pittston Gas Light Company and treasurer of the PiIttston Water Co. In 1869 he was one of the organizers of the Miners Savings Bank of Pittston and its Vice President until 1872 when the President Mr. J. B Smith retiring, he was elected his successor, which position he retained until failing health a few months previous to his death compelled him to resign. During the panic caused by the failure of J Cook and Co it was reported in the local papers that the bank had failed but the report was false. And how jealously its president guarded the interest of its depositors was demonstrated on that occasion when he nobly pledged his own estate and stood in the gap ready to secure any and all who had deposited their hard earnings in his care. The bank, however, passed through the ordeal unscathed and came forth with the stilll greater confidence of the public. In 1844 Mr. Reap was married to Miss Honora Conner, an Irish lady then living in Carbondale and in 1849 to Miss Mary Bowlin who survives him. He was always a great friend to education - having been deprived of its advantages in his youth and his first care for his children was to see that they were well educated; and at his death he left a legacy for the founding of a Convent School in Pittston. He was a consistent and good Catholic and was always attentive to his Christian duties. His success in life was attributed to his determination to rise in the world aided but his never tiring industry; always cautious, never venturing beyond his depth and not given to wild speculation, but confining himself to a safe and legitimate business, he is without a doubt a true type of the self made man.

1878 -Wilkes Barre Record May 13, 1878
The funeral of the late Michael Reap will take place to-morrow morning at half past nine o'clock. Mass will be celebrated at 10, and Rev. Father Finnen will preach the funeral sermon. Mr. Reap gave all the necessary directions for his burial several months ago, and his wishes in this respect have been carried out to the very letter. He named his pall bearers--all old friends and business associates--long ago. Before the depreciation of real estate he was reputed to be worth about 0,000, but it is quite probable that he has left at least 0,000 worth of property to his wife and children. He had about ,000 in the Miners' Savings Bank and owned gas and water stock worth nearly as much more. His late residence is the handsomest and most elegantly appointed mansion in Pittston and cost a fortune in itself. Mrs. Reap will continue to reside there with the younger children.
Wilkes Barre Leader - 1878-05-16 - Pittston
The death of Mr. Michael Reap on Saturday monring last, has largely absorbed public thought and sympathy during the last few days. Mr. Reap had been in failing health for a year pastand for the last few months had suffered greatly - a suffering borne with great resignation and Christian patience. His death was not unexpected but will be none the less deeply felt and mourned as that of one of your most honored public spirited and exemplary citizes. Coming to Pittston as long ago as 1840 when the place was but a village, his creer has been identified with its growth and prosperity, which he has done at least as much as any other one person to promote. The same ability honesty and economy which enabled him to build up his own private fortune he brought to bear upon each of the many public enterprises with which he was connected. And he did this in the most marked manner during his seven year administration as Burgess of Pittston Borough. The funeral services took place on Tuesday morning at St John's RC church of which he had so long been one of the most prominent and beloved members. A solemn requiem Mass was celebrated by Very Rev John Finnen, assisted by Rev Messrs McDermott and Lynett, The church, which is much the largest audience room in town, was thronged to its utmost capacity. Father Finnen's sermon was an earnes, touching and impressive one. Taking for his text the first two verses of the 14th chapter of Job, he addressed the great congregation present on the certainty of death, the need of such life as should be the best preparation for it; and then went on to speak of the man who lay dead before him, of the spiritual side of his life especially during the last few months, of his steadfast growth in Christian grace and resignation. At the close of his sermon, Father Finnen took his place beside the casket, and impressively recited the de Profundis. At its close, the pallbearers took their places again and the funeral procession moved slowly out. During its progress through the streets, all places of business were closed as a mark of respect to the deceased, whose memory will long remain in honor amoung all classes of our community.

1907 - Wilkes Barre Record March 21, 1907
Mrs Mary Bolen Reap died at her home, corner of Church and William Streets, yesterday afternoon at 4:30, of general disability. She was aged 77 years, her last birthday being on March 6. Deceased was the widow of the late Michael Reap. Mrs. Reap was born in Ireland and when quite young emigrated to this country, having lived in Pittston all this time. Mrs. Reap has been ill since last December, and her condition had been serious since Friday. The nurse and family physician had given up hopes several days ago. Mrs Reap was entirely devoted to her children and a model mother. She was also a devoted worker in the church when younger in years and was loved by all. Her charities, to which her ample means enabled her to devote much time and money, were entirely unostentatious, and known only to her beneficiaries. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of the societies connected with St. John's Church, namely--the Holy Rosary and the Altar and Scapular. She possessed a charming disposition, and in her death Pittston loses a most generous woman, whose place will be hard to fill. Her late husband was the founder of the Miners' Savings Bank of Pittston.
The family moved from Upper Pittston in 1871, and have since resided in the beautiful mansion, corner of Church and William streets. Among the surviving children are: Mrs B. A. O'Malley, Thomas M. of Tacoma, Washington; George, Dr. Joseph C. Reap, Mrs. G. F. Bohan. She was also survived by one brother, M. Bolen of Upper Pittston. There are also several grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. The funeral will take place on Saturday morning, with a solemn requiem mass in St. John's Church, and interment will be made in the family vault in St. John's Cemetary beside the remains of her late husband.
