Biography

This profile is part of the Bolin Name Study.
Private Nathan Bolin served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: Mar 03, 1865
Mustered out: Sep 12, 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company A, Ohio 1st Cavalry

Nathan Coffman Bolin was born on August 3, 1833 in Fayette Co., Ohio to Eli Bolin and Lucretia Goldsberry. [1] [2] [3]

In 1850, Nathan lived in the household of Abraham McCoy in Union Twp., Fayette Co., Ohio. [4]

Nathan married Lucinda Cook on December 24, 1857 in Stark Co., Illinois. (Need source.)

Nathan served as a Private in Company A of the 1st Ohio Cavalry during the U.S. Civil War and was severely injured in battle, forcing the amputation of his left arm. [5] [6]

After his service for the Union in the Civil War, Nathan and Lucinda took up residence with their family in Cornwall, Henry Co., Illinois. Nathan was financially successful while working his own farm (valued at $7000), so much so that the family employed a domestic household servant. [7]

By 1883, Nathan found his way back to his home state of Ohio and on November 14, 1883 he married Eunice R. Lybarger in Knox County. [8] Nathan would start a family with Eunice and by 1900 they were living and farming in Nolan Co., Texas. [9] Nathan and his family remained in Nolan County for at least the next ten years. [10]

At some point after 1910, Nathan made his way north and in 1915 was living in the small town of Monona, Clayton Co., Iowa. [11]

Nathan passed away on May 27, 1916 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa. He was 82 years old. [1] [2]

Biological Father Status: Uncertain

Recent Y-DNA testing completed by a male descendant of Nathan Coffman Bolin at Family Tree DNA suggests that Nathan may not be a biological son of Eli Bolin. This descendant's closest Y-DNA matches are another male descendant of Nathan Coffman Bolin (Genetic Distance=2 at 37 markers) and a McCoy tester (Genetic Distance=3 at 37 and 67 markers). This McCoy tester lists his Earliest Known Ancestor on FTDNA as John Thomas McCoy (McKoy) Sr., who was a member of a large family that lived in Fayette Co., Ohio during the early 1800s. The other Bolin tester who matches at 37 markers has a Terminal SNP of R-L513, which is a subclade of R-L21. The McCoy surname has historically been a part of this R-L513 haplogroup, but Bolin/Bolen/Bullen et al. has not. This evidence and the fact that this recent tester does not match or share the same subclade as another documented descendant of Eli Bolin (R-U152) suggests that there may have been a Non-Paternity Event (NPE) involving Nathan's mother, Lucretia (Goldsberry) Bolin, and a male McCoy or that Eli Bolin himself was a McCoy.
