These 1850 census records match up perfectly with the 1840 census of Lincoln Co., NC, were Christian “Bullinger” is listed as head of household along with two white males under age 5 (William Franklin and Joseph), one white female between 5-10 (Susanna, age 8), and one white female age 20-30 (Sarah/Sally). The younger children not yet born.

In the 1830 Lincoln Co., NC census, Christian Bullinger is head of household, living with one female age 30-40 and one age 70-80. The older woman is most likely his mother. The younger one could be a first wife or one of his two sisters, Polly (Anna Maria) or Susanna (Anna Susanna). In any case, the 18 year old Susanna who shows up in the 1850 Knox Co. census is probably the daughter of one of those three women.

In 1850, a “Christopher” Bolinger, age 63, is listed in the Knox County census (see attached). Also in the household is his wife, Sarah, age 34; Susanah, age 18; William Franklin, age 12; Joseph, age 10; Carline, age 7; Margaett, age 5; and Christian R., age 1.

The spelling of names in these early records is variable. Christian’s parents most likely still spoke German at least at home. Christian’s generation probably knew both German and English, but many were illiterate. In this household, wife Sarah is listed as not being able to read or write, so if she answered the door when the census-taker came round, it’s understandable that the spelling of the names might be a bit off. But I believe that the ages are accurate as well as the places of birth.
