Biography

Younger son of his father Thomas' first marriage to Elizabeth Perkins. He was baptized 19 Feb 1608 at Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England. He immigrated to New England circa 1640, settling in Winter Harbor, Maine. He later removed himself to Welles, Maine.[1][2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]


He married Mary Howell with whom he had three sons and five daughters:

  • Mary, wife of Col. Charles Frost
  • Hannah, wife of Caleb Becke & Nathaniel Wright
  • Elizabeth, wife of Philip Locke & William Pitman
  • Sarah, wife of Humphrey Chadbourne
  • Mercy

Joseph died just before 29 Nov 1678 (date of inventory).

Children include Joseph Bowles bp 19 Feb 1656 at Worksop, Nottinghamshire who arrived in New England 1640 settled at Winter Harbor, Maine. He was apprentice at Kingston-upon-Hull. Joseph Bolles married Mary Howell. Children: Thomas, Samuel, Joseph, Mary (m Charles Frost), Hannah (m Caleb Becke and Nathaniel Wright), Elizabeth (m Philip Locke and William Pitman), Sarah (m Humphrey Chadbourne) and Mercy. Returned twice to England. He was legatee in 1665 in the will of his brother John Bolles of St. James, Clekenwell in 1665. Will dated 18 Sep 1678 at Wells. Widow mary living 25 Feb 1690/1 at Portsmouth.
