Biography

Robert Bolt, Sr. was born 16th of August 1710 in Ireland. He was arrested for stealing a hat and sentenced to deportation. He arrived in 1737, in Virginia on the ship 'Dorsetshire' from Newgate Prison.^[1]

At some point, Robert, migrates to Laurens County, South Carolina and is enumerated in the 1790 Census.^[2]

He passed away in June, 1792 according to his Find A Grave: Memorial #51814318 and is buried at the Bolt Family Cemetery #1, Gray Court, Laurens County, South Carolina, USA. Find A Grave Note: "Prepared on the 24th of Jany, 1869, by Hiram Bolt." From Robert Bolt family, "A transcribed page from a Bolt family Bible states the birth date entered here, as well as listing his wife and children. This document has been widely circulated and is attached to this memorial. Note that it is not an original record and so may contain errors. The Bolt surname is identified as having originated in Scotland in many surname references. Family lore suggests Robert may have been born in Ireland or Northern Ireland. These items may combine to support speculation that the Bolts were among the quarter-million 'Ulster Scots' who sailed from Ireland to North America.
