Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Louisa Cecilia Bolton was born in about 1837 in Liverpool, Lancashire. She was probably the daughter of Elizabeth Bolton, who was in the same household in 1841. Louisa was the niece of Roman Catholic priest Richard Bolton. She was probably the granddaughter of Henry Bolton (1776-1860) who was buried in the same grave as Louisa.

By June 6th 1841, Louisa and and her presumed mother Elizabeth were living in Liverpool Road, Eccleston, Lancashire. Her mother's occupation was recorded as "P.D." but unfortunately this is not one of the abbreviations the enumerators were meant to use, so its meaning is unclear. Private domestic? Provision dealer? Priest's something? Also in the household (and a separate family unit, demarcated by the "//" between Lousia and Peter) were Peter Bolton (aged 25-9 and an organist), Catherine Bolton (25-29) and Mary Ann Bolton (3). There's a good chance Peter was Elizabeth's brother-in-law and Louisa's uncle.

By March 30th 1851, Louisa was living in Grove Square, Leyburn, Yorkshire with her uncle Richard Bolton, who was the Catholic priest of St Peter and St Paul in Leyburn, and her spinster aunt Martha M Bolton, his housekeeper. They had one servant, 32-year-old Fanny Hasker, and a lodger, 28-year-old Richard Foss, who was the organist, a professor of music, and also schoolmaster (of the Catholic school - he died of tuberculosis in Chester in 1855.[1])

In about 1853-4, when she was 16 or 17 years old, Louisa designed the one stained glass window of St Peter and St Paul's Church, the east window.[2]

By April 7th 1861, Louisa was in Leyburn with her uncle Richard Bolton and aunt Martha M Bolton. Richard was still the Catholic priest; Martha and Louisa were independent by income from money. Frances Harker (now 42) was still their house servant.

Louisa died in about May 1861 at St Peter's RC Chapel House, Leyburn, Yorkshire; her death notice was published on 4 May 1861, and she was buried on 6 May 1861 in Wigan Cemetery, Lower Ince, Lancashire.
