John Bomar was born about 1720 in England. He died before 22 April 1799 when his will was proved in Halifax County, Virginia.
In the will of his father, dated November 26, 1757, John and his brother William were named as sole executors, but it appears that when the will was probated in August of 1766, John and William were both living in Halifax County and it was William who came back to administer his father's estate. William, John, Thomas and Peter, all sons of Edward, were residents of Halifax County as early as 1761.
John married Barbara Bush, daughter of Bibby and Susannah Bush of Essex County, and later moved to Halifax County, Virginia, probably due to the lack of good tobacco growing ground. Here he reared a family of nine sons and one daughter. In his will, dated January 17, 1799, he names his wife Barbara and sons John, Fielding, Edward, Bibby, William ( who then died leaving a wife and children), Booker, Armstead, Spencer, and Reuben, and a daughter Susannah, wife of Thomas Hodges. His will was probated April 22, 1799. A friend, James Brice, and sons Bibby and Fielding Bomar, were named executors. Bond for the executors was set by the court at ,000.00. Apparently he was a successful tobacco grower from the size of the bond.
Tradition has it that John Bomar served in the Revolutionary War, but while this may or may not be true, the records in the Clerks office of Halifax County show that John Bomar did furnish supplies and materials to aid the Revolutionary cause. In the year 1782, according to the records, he was issued a certificate foe 21 pounds, 5 shillings for furnishing the Continental Army 300 pounds beef and a bay horse, 8 years old, height 4' 11".
John was one of three brothers that came over from England and settled in Virginia. Reuben son of John, moved to Tennessee 1825-1830 then to Christian County, Kentucky and then to Henry County, Tennessee where he died in 1841. Reuben's brother Bibby married a sister of Billy "Hog" Walker of Spartenburg, South Carolina. They had three sons lost in the lines at Petersburg, Virginia in 1864.

Comments: These documents seem to indicate the following:
1. Apparently this was an ongoing case in the Essex County Courts. Many such cases kept
coming before the court for years.
2. When Bibby Bush died in 1748 the court appointed Thomas Henry Brooke as
guardian of his son, Thomas Bush.
3. Since the original and first document concerning this matter used the term "infant"
it was probably used every time the case came up before the court again, even though
the child in question could by then have been 5, 10, or 15 years older in the later courts.
4. Since this lawsuit was against the estate of Bibby Bush and his heir, Thomas Bush and his guardian, this document proves that Thomas Bush was the only son of Bibby Bush. According to the law, any other sons would have been required to be mentioned since they would have been heirs to the estate along with Thomas. Since no others are mentioned the meaning is clear that Thomas Bush was the only son of Bibby Bush of Essex Co., Va.
5. Barbara Bush, who married John Bomar, was a sister of Thomas Bush and she,
through her husband John Bomar, brought suit against the estate of Bibby Bush
in order to get her share of the estate. The court responded by ordering that enough of the slaves be advertised for sale in order to distribute a proper share of the estate to the youngest children.
6. Even though Thomas Bush's mother was still alive, he was still called the orphan of
Bibby Bush. Susannah Bush (widow of Bibby) married 2nd in 1758, Stephen Neal. By this
time Thomas was old enough according to the law and he chose Stephen Neal as his guardian
7. The earliest document so far found for Thomas Bush in Essex County, Va. is an indenture that he witnessed dated 12/1/1764 (Essex Co., Va. Deed Book 30 - Page 13,14) This would mean that in 1759 at the beginning of this lawsuit he was age 16. By that time Thomas's mother, Susannah Bush had married a second husband who was Stephen Neal and since Thomas was considered by the court to be old enough to choose his own guardian, he chose Stephen Neal.
