John Silas Bond was born on 23 May 1828 in Wayne County, Indiana to Darius Bond (1803-1846) and Elizabeth (Betsy) Hockett (1809-1866).
On 17 Aug 1849 John Silas Bond married Elisabeth Collins in Henry Co, Iowa. The marriage was performed by Justice of the Peace William Patten. From this union, seven children were born, all in Iowa:
In 1850, John and family are shown in the US Census for Tippecanoe Township, Henry, Iowa.
"In the fall of 1854, Mr. Bond came to Hardin county and located on the place where he now lives. He has 140 acres of land under cultivation, valued at $50 per acre.
Mr. Bond is an acknowledged minister in the Friends Church."[1]
In 1860, 1870 and 1880, John and family are shown in the US Census for Providence Township, Hardin, Iowa.
Elisabeth died in Hardin County, Iowa on Mar 21, 1868.
John married second, Mary Jane Mills Hammer in Hardin Co, Iowa on 27 Nov 1869. They had three children:
These children, plus the seven from his first marriage and five from Mary Jane's first marriage, created a very large family.
In the 1885 Iowa State Census, John and family are shown in Providence, Hardin, Iowa.
John and Mary Jane had moved to Orange, Orange, California by 1900 and remained there until their deaths.
John died 2 Oct 1911 (aged 83), Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, and is buried in Broadway Cemetery, Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, Plot: Block - A , lot 13 , grave 2.[2]
