Biography

James was a Friend (Quaker)

It is likely that James Bond would have been born early in the 1640s, perhaps about 1642, in the county of Yorkshire, England.

Among the records of the Brighouse Monthly Meeting, James Bond was frequently referred to as "James Bond of Bradford." There have been claims that he was from Wrose, which lies north of Bradford in Yorkshire.[1] Nevertheless, it seems that James resided within the circle of the Parish of Bradford,[2] as well as in Boulton in the parish of Calverley.[3]

Marriages

The Register Books of the Brighouse Monthly Meeting in Yorkshire evince how James Bond of Bradford took each of his three wives in public Ceremonies of Marriage conducted in the Manner of the people of God call'd Quakers. His first wife was Sarah Booth, his second wife was Ann Poole, and his third wife was Martha Yewdall.

Marriage to Sarah Booth

Three separate entries among the records testify to the marriage between James Bond and Sarah Booth. It appears from these records that the specific date of the event was uncertain.

  • Be it Remembered that in the Lattr End of the 2d Moth 1665 That James Bond of Bradford & Sarah Booth of the same in the house of ___ did take one another & solemly Joyn together in Marriage according to the good Ordr of Truth before Many Witnesses.[4]

Marriage to Ann Poole

Three separate entries among the records also testify to the marriage between James Bond and Ann Poole. The date of the event was apparently the first day of the sixth month 1670, and the ceremony occurred "in the house of John Jowett (abt.1646-)."

  • Be it Remembered yt in ye Begining of ye 6th Moth. 1670 that James Bond of Bradford & Ann Pool of the Same in ye County of York in the house of John Jowet did take each other & solemnly Joyn togethr in Marriage according to the good Order of Truth before many witns.[7]

Marriage to the Widdow Yewdall

Martha Pearson and Zachariah Yewdall took each other in a public Ceremony of Marriage in the Manner of the Quakers on the 24th day of June 1694. Merely fifteen years had passed when Zachariah Yewdall of Idle departed life on ye 21st day of ye 9th month in the yeare 1709.[10] Eleven years later, James Bond and Martha Yewdall took each other in a Ceremony of Marriage:

  • Now these are to Certifie all whon it may Concern That for ye full Accomplishing of their sd Intentions this thirty first Day of ye Sixth Month called August in the Year according to English Account 1720 They ye sd james Bond & Martha Yewdall appeared in a publick Assembly of the aforesd people and others met together at their publick Meeting place in Bradford afore-named in ye sd County...[11]

Children

There were altogether seven children begotten of the first two marriages with James Bond.

Children Born to Sarah Booth

A notation for the birth of his first child, a daughter Elizabeth, born to Sarah Booth, was entered in the records of Monthly Meeting of Brighouse:

Elizabeth daughter of James Bond of Bradford born ye 27th of 7th mo. 1668 (27 Sep 1668).[12]

Children Born to Ann Poole

The following list of children, being born after 1668, when Sarah Booth passed, are presumed to have been born to Ann Poole. Their entries appear in the same collection:

  1. Robert son of James Bond of Bradford born in the lattr end of ye 8th mo:th. 1670 (31 Oct 1670).[13]

Research Notes

The date of birth for James Bond of Bradford has been estimated.

Regarding the birth of James Bond

A potential baptismal record is available for James Bond, based on the claim that he may have been from Bolton. Places of the name Bolton existed both in Yorkshire as well as Lancashire in England. This baptismal record is held at a parish near to Bolton, Lancashire, and resides in Tatham, Lancashire, at St. James the Less Church.

Christnings 1646
James Bond, Gulielmi filius, baptizebatus 26 Julii[21][22]

There are some ancestral trees that claim this record belongs to the James Bond of this profile; however, it is unverified as to whether or not this is the correct parentage.

According to records from members of the family, the location where this Bond lineage resided was variously Bolton in Bradford or Bowling in Bradford, both situate in the County of York. Another option could be Bolton in the Parish of Calverley, [23]

The memorial created at Find-a-Grave for James Bond of Bradford offers the date of his birth as "7 Mar 1642." However, the text accompanying the memorial does not indicate the source for that date.[24]
