Obituary

Cora Morrison

July 11, 1925 — Aug. 6, 2009

Cora Bond Morrison passed away peacefully on Aug. 6, 2009 at Wilson Medical Center. She was 84 years old.

She was born on July 11, 1925, in Edenton, the daughter of Edward Warren Bond and Cora Leary Bond. She grew up on East King Street in Edenton and graduated from Edenton High School. She attended Mary Washington College and graduated from East Carolina Teachers’ College, now East Carolina University.

She taught high school in Sanford from 1948 to 1951 when she moved to Wilson, where she met and married local druggist Brame P. Morrison in 1956. She taught at Charles L. Coon High School and was beloved by her former students. She “retired” from teaching in 1958 and raised two children.

Much of her time was devoted to church, civic, and charitable affairs. She served as president of the Junior Woman’s Club and was an early supporter of the Wilson Arts Council. She helped form Community Concerts to bring pop and classical music to Wilson venues. Along with her husband, she worked tirelessly to raise money for the American Heart Association. She was active in the lives of her children and became involved in their schools as a volunteer. She instilled in her children the value of giving back to their communities. As her children grew older, she began working as a bookkeeper at The Georgian Room in Wilson and enjoyed the many friends she made while working there.

After her husband passed away in 1991, she was active in her widowhood, visiting the sick and reconnecting with old friends. She especially enjoyed going to events at the Boykin Center and Barton College. She was devoted to First Presbyterian Church and the Dudley Sunday School Class, which she would occasionally teach. In 2004, the Presbyterian Women honored her as a Life Member of the organization.

She is survived by her children, Harriett Morrison Loweth and husband, Robert Pierpont Loweth, of Wilmington and Brame Perry Morrison Jr. and wife, Nancy Hooper Morrison, of Wilson. She was very proud of her four grandchildren, Robert Pierpont Loweth Jr., Brame Perry Morrison III, Katharyn Stuart Loweth, and Nell St. Clair Morrison. She is also survived by her eldest brother, W. George Bond, D.D.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete, but arrangements are being handled by Joyner’s Funeral Home. Memorials in her memory may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 3184, Wilson, NC 27895. Condolences may be directed to www.joyners.net.
