Tributes

From the 175th Anniversary Celebration, East Fork Baptist Church, Sept. 1985:

Thomas M. Bond born in Georgia came to Pike County, united with Salem (this Salem was organized in 1826 largely through efforts of Charles Felder). Church later moved to Magnolia, very likely under the preaching of Charles Felder; and while still in his teens married Rebecca Felder a daughter of the preacher. Moved on to East Fork Community in 1830, was ordained deacon June 4, 1836, was licensed and in November 1836 was ordained to preach. Thomas M. Bond was an admirable character converting more than 2000 souls to Christ in short span of 19 years and dying an untimely death in 1855 from yellow fever at 45 years of age. He too leaves many descendants in this area.

During his short ministry, though often in feeble health, he labored most efficiently for God and Heaven sealed with approbation the work spoken to the conversion of more than two thousand souls, whom he was permitted to bury with his Lord in baptism. The character of his mind was acute, investigating and discriminative to an extraordinary degree. Rarely did he close a sermon without exhibiting, by the fervor of his manner and the tone of his voice that his soul was interested for the salvation of sinners. His heart was with his brethren in every good word and work. Thomas M. Bond will long live in history for his works sake. The interest East Fork Church has in Thomas M. Bond is a relationship of mother and son--he went out from this church as one of her first ordained preachers.

From "Abstract History of The Mississippi Baptist Association," 1906, pp. 84-85: "Thomas M. Bond departed this life October 7, 1855. In the decease of this able, devoted, laborious and talented minister of the gospel our churches have sustained no ordinary loss. For years we have been accustomed to look to him as one of the pillars of Baptist principles in our extended regions, and we deeply lament his loss, yet not without the consoling reflection that, though lost to the church on earth, he lives, a spirit, in glory. "Brother Bond was born in the State of Georgia, March 25, 1810. When quite a child his father, Henry Bond, emigrated to the State of Mississippi, Pike county. He professed religion at the age of seventeen years, and was baptized into the fellowship of Salem Baptist church. In his eighteenth year he was united in marriage with Rebecca Felder, a daughter of Rev. Chas. Felder. At the age of twenty he was licensed to preach the gospel and was ordained to the full work of the ministry in 1836. From that period to the close of life he was identified with all the interests of his denomination in this portion of our country. During the twenty years of his ministry, though often in feeble health . . . (The rest was copied verbatim in the East Fork 175th Anniversary bulletin quoted above.)

From "Texas Baptist Newspaper Abstracts (7 March 1855 - 21 February 1884)" published by the Dallas Genealogical Society, Dallas, Texas, 1992: 29 Nov. 1856, Vol. II, No. 48: In correspondence from W. F. Cain, Amite Co., Miss., his association, the Mississippi River, he included the following: The ministry has been weakened by the loss of two valuable brethren, Elder Thomas M. Bond and Elder T. R. Creatham.

Minutes of Eastern Louisiana Association, 1843: T. M. Bond was delegate from Bluff Creek, a church organized in 1841--Post Office was Clinton.
