Biography

William was born in 1841[1], the son of Thomas Bond and Grace Hetherington.

He travelled to the British Virgin Islands with his parents when he was only very young. Both his parents died there from yellow fever in 1844.

Back in England, in the 1851 census he was living with his grandparents Thomas and Mary Bond in New Road, Lancaster, Lancashire, England. Aged 10 and a Scholar. Also in the household were his three sisters; Grace, Mary and Hannah.

He married Elizabeth Percy on 5 November 1862 in Lancaster, Lancashire, England[2]:

MARRIAGES
On the 5th inst, at the Wesleyan Chapel, Lancaster, the Rev. S. Merrill, Mr William Thornton Bond, letterpress printer, to Miss Elizabeth Percy, milliner, both of this town.[3]

They then emigrated from England to New Zealand in late 1862 (as did his sister Mary and her husband) arriving into Nelson on the ship Electra. There followed the birth of their five children.

"Mr. WILLIAM THORNTON BOND, Senior Partner, is a native of Lancashire, England, and was educated at the Royal Grammar school, Lancashire. On leaving school he entered the office of the “Lancaster Guardian,” and remained there for seven years. When Mr. Bond landed at Nelson in the latter part of 1862, he went on to Marlborough, where he was employed on the “Marlborough Press.” He entered the “Colonist” office in 1863 as a compositor, and by perseverance worked his way up to his present position. Mr. Bond is a prominent Forester. He was a member of the Nelson school committee for nine years, and was twice elected chairman. Mr. Bond takes an active interest in temperance matters."[4]

In the 1890 NZ Electoral Rolls he was recorded at Nelson, working as a Printer.

His wife Elizabeth died in 1911.

In the 1914 NZ Electoral Rolls William was recorded at Collingwood Street, Nelson, a Newspaper Proprietor.

William passed away in 1933 at the age of 92.
