Lester E. Bond was my grandfather. He was small in stature, generous in girth, and tremendous in personality. As a young man he competed in many sports, including gymnastics and incogruously given his height, basketball. He completed an MS in soil biology (I have his thesis) and was starting a PhD when he felt called to the ministry. This was near the time of the Scopes trials and my grandfather believed that a devout Christian could also be a friend of science - and in particular a believer in evolution. He served his country honorable during both world wars. He was funny - prone to awful but delightful puns. He came from a humble background, at least for the 2 or 3 generations immediately before him, and I deeply admire him for all of his accomplishments.
