Orlando was born in 1849 in New York State[1] the son of Sullivan and Maria Bond. His nickname "Brick" is said to have come from his brick red hair.
He moved to Minnesota as a child and then moved to the West at age 22 in 1871. He worked for the Santa Fe Railroad supplying buffalo meat and arrived in Dodge City in 1872. A prodigious buffalo hunter, it is claimed he killed over 10,000. Later he became an advocate of strict game laws to help preserve all wildlife on the Great Plains.[2]
Brick's partner in the purchase of the Lady Gay Saloon and dance hall in 1881 was Tom Nixon, fellow buffalo hunter and Dodge City Assistant Marshal. In 1884, Brick partnered with Dodge City Mayor Alonzo Webster in the opening of The Palace Drugstore.
In his reminiscence of life on the Great Plains, R. M. Wright wrote of Brick Bond at a time in life when only seven men who had helped start Dodge City in 1872 still remained, "O. A. Bond is pointed out, by the younger generation, as the great hunter and nimrod--the man who killed so many buffalo in one day, and stood in the front ranks of the mighty hunters in early days. He is now the owner of one of our largest drug stores, and is taking life easy in his old days."[3]
He passed away in 1927.
